From Chapter Two of Longing to Belong

Since the beginning of time, we were created as communal beings called to live and work in communion with God and one another. Throughout the biblical story, God called Abram and Sarai, Moses and Aaron, Jesus and the disciples, Paul and Silas to live and work together as a community of faith to fulfill God’s purpose among and through them. Likewise, God calls us to live and work together today as a community through which God will bring about his Kingdom here on earth.
Life in community is our calling, but as with any calling it comes with challenges. As believers who belong to Jesus Christ and to one another as the Body of Christ, we are committed to living into God’s will for us as individuals and as a group. But as for any group, life in community requires going through a process or journey of belonging that involves various stages. Through these stages, or journey of belonging, we must learn Who we are, Whose we are, and What God is calling us to do.
